Art Courses at SD City College

ART Courses at San Diego City College

Currently, we offer many advanced level courses in studio arts for students to develop art making skills over time. We encourage students not only to transfer to 4-year institutions for a BA, but we develop students art-making skills for entrepreneurship. Many of our students have started their own businesses in art and design fields. Although it is difficult to be successful only making and selling artwork, most artists enjoy the supplementary income creating art.

STEAM (STEM + Art and Design)

What is STEAM?

Science + Technology + Engineering + ARTS + Math

See website links here to learn more:

http://stemtosteam.org

http://steam-notstem.com

See an article in EdWeek for more discussion,
http://www.edweek.org/tm/articles/2014/11/18/ctq-jolly-stem-vs-steam.html

PBS article:
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/the-movement-to-put-arts-into-stem-education/

"A study by the National Endowment for the Arts shows that students from lower socio-economic backgrounds who actively participated in the arts tended to score better in science and writing, and were more likely to aspire to college."

Also from Slate...
http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/future_tense/2015/06/steam_vs_stem_why_we_need_to_put_the_arts_into_stem_education.html

But the STEAM movement isn’t about spending 20 percent less time on science, technology, engineering, and math to make room for art. It’s about sparking students’ imagination and helping students innovate through hands-on STEM projects. And perhaps most importantly, it’s about applying creative thinking and design skills to these STEM projects so that students can imagine a variety of ways to use STEM skills into adulthood.

What is sustainability?

There are tons of definitions you can find online. Here's one, http://www.thwink.org/sustain/glossary/Sustainability.htm

The Three Pillars of Sustainability
The principle of The Three Pillars of Sustainability says that for the complete sustainability problem to be solved all three pillars of sustainability must be sustainable. The three pillars are social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
